Hello and welcome to part 1 of 3 of my basement renovation blog post! Let me start off by saying – we did not plan this basement renovation. Almost EXACTLY to the day, 1 year after we bought our house, our basement flooded. We had a foot and a half of water in our completely finished basement – it was heartbreaking. All of our furniture, our electronics, our washer and dryer… Everything. I’ve included some pictures below, and looking at these as I was writing this post broke my heart all over again.
Immediately after the flood, we called our friend Cody who owns a construction company to help us out. Little did we know this flood would be the biggest silver lining we could’ve ever expected – but more about that later. Before Cody could start, we had to throw everything out. And when I say everything, I mean everything. The couch, coffee table, PlayStation, mini fridge, childhood things we had kept when we moved out of our parents homes, Pete’s art supplies, his brand new custom built computer – EVERYTHING. And then we realized we lost a lot more – our washer, dryer, hot water tank, furnace (which was a year old…!!!) Luckily it was the beginning of September so we didn’t need the furnace or air, but STILL, not something you want to be without.

Once we cleared everything out of our basement, Cody and the team got to work on ripping everything out. They took out all the big furniture, and started to rip out the drywall – 2 feet of it around the entire basement. They took up the floor, the trim, took all the doors off, and cleaned up all the remaining water and… stuff. What I didn’t mention was that this was actually a bit of a septic backup – GOOD STUFF, I know. Luckily (I guess?), most of the water was rain water, so there wasn’t a super awful smell. Just unpleasant.

We are trucking along with our renovations right now – stay tuned for post 2/3 to see how its coming along! Framing our new entertainment centre, our new back flow valve, paint, lights, flooring – the whole kit and kaboodle! The last part will be our basement all complete.
Thanks for reading, stay tuned for the next update!
